The Summit School
Therapeutic Services
The Summit School students are expected to identify issues that have impeded their success in school, at home, or their community. Once they have done so, they will be encouraged to adopt healthier coping skills, co-create and implement goals that address their target behaviors, accept and utilize feedback from staff and peers and make any necessary changes to their goals. This process will help our students prepare for the immense transition that greets them after high school.
Students are assigned a counselor when starting at The Summit School. Students, with the help of their counselor, are expected to learn to communicate with staff and peers when there is an issue that is troubling them. Students will also be asked to set individual goals addressing academic progress, social/emotional growth and development of a viable transition plan.
Group counseling provides an opportunity to gain insight into behaviors that are impacting the student’s success. It also provides a forum for giving and receiving feedback from peers to help create and maintain an emotionally safe environment and resulting in more appropriate behaviors. Students are also encouraged to work on cooperation, communication, trust, social skills and developing a better self-image.
