Longview School
at the Summit Center
Students
The Longview school serves students ages 14-21 who have identified
emotional and behavioral disabilities.
We accept students who are aware of their issues and or able to respond to feedback and redirection. Our students must be willing to participate fully in academic classes, individual counseling and group counseling.
Campus
The facility is a log structure located on the highest peak of a 154-acre
campus bordering Pawtuckaway State Park. The wilderness setting is
ideal for academic studies, inspiration for the art program, and
Adventure-Based Counseling.
Academics
The Longview school at Summit Center is New Hampshire’s premier, alternative
state approved diploma granting high school. While following New
Hampshire Curriculum Frameworks, basic skills, content, and values are
taught through experiential, hands-on opportunities.
Students must be of average intellectual ability and capable of performing in a small -group setting. We recognize the varying achievement levels of our students and have created a learning environment that addresses individuals’ academic needs based on established goals.
In addition to a range of required academic courses, exciting options for elective classes are available: courses taught by visiting artists, woodworking, ornithology, small engine mechanics, bike maintenance, desktop publishing and many more.
Arts
and Adventure
All students take part in an activity oriented counseling group for
the year. Students develop self confidence, self awareness, social
skills, communication skills and healthy coping strategies in an emotionally
and physically safe environment. Adventure activities include
rock climbing, backpacking, whitewater canoeing, sea kayaking, mountain
biking, backcountry skiing,
snowboarding, and ropes course elements. Arts Adventure combines
outdoor activities with opportunities for creating personal and group art.
Longview
Faculty
The Longview faculty are highly qualified, skilled and dedicated professionals.
Our teachers and counselors have many years of experience in their
specific disciplines and with the at risk population.
Tom Jennings, M.Ed., our director, has over 20 years experience in alternative and outdoor education. He is well known and respected in both education and adventure fields.
Therapeutic Services
In an effort to promote the mental, emotional and physical growth of
each individual, Longview School incorporates a range of therapeutic modalities
including a structured behavior management plan, Adventure -Based Counseling,
Art Therapy, small therapeutic groups targeting specific needs and individual
counseling.
Admissions
Interested students take part in an interview process which includes
the school, family and student to determine if Longview is an appropriate
placement. The second step is for the student to visit the school
for a full day. If deemed appropriate, students are enrolled for
a 45-day assessment period. Once accepted, a Longview Individual
Education Plan is developed. Applications are accepted year round,
based on openings.
