Violence Prevention and Conflict Resolution

Essential Question: How do teens handle anger, violence and conflict and how can they resolve these problems?

Choose one project. Make sure that you complete all of the paperwork that is required such as the contract, the planning paperwork and any other notes or drafts of your project.

Mathematical/Logical (Number Smart): Find statistics on violent crimes in NH or the USA. How could the penitentiary system work to lower these numbers?  After looking at the numbers and doing the work to discover how to prevent violence and resolve conflicts create a program that inmates to go through to decrease violent behavior and to resolve conflicts without violence.  Finally present your program to the class for review.

Linguistic (Word Smart): Imagine that you are someone involved in a conflict. Explain the conflict, how it happened and what has happened so far. Write about how your feeling about this conflict. Then create 3 different plans for resolving the conflict using your knowledge of conflict resolution. For your presentation give the class a summary of the conflict, and the three positive ways that you managed to avoid violence and settle this conflict. If you have a hard time writing a fictional story, use one that you actually experienced, but change the names to avoid “airing your dirty laundry” to class.

Spatial (Art Smart): Write and illustrate a children’s book about conflict resolution. What do little kids need to know about how to resolve conflicts in their lives?  What are the steps that they need to follow? Make sure you put all of this important information into a story form that children will understand.

Music: A lot of today’s music is about violence.  Write a song that your peers would enjoy that talks about how to resolve conflict. You will need to use the information that you get from your research about what steps to take to resolve conflicts and then use that in your song. Finally perform your song and record it to CD or perform it live in front of the class.

Naturalistic (Nature Smart): How do animals resolve conflict?  How is this the same, or different than the ways that humans resolve conflict? What positives can be seen in the animal ways of conflict resolution that might work in human conflict resolution?  What things should not be included in the human ways of conflict resolution?  What plan do you have for integrating the two plans?  Create a presentation (poster, power point, handout, brochure, etc) that answers these questions and presents your plan for integrating both systems to the class.

Interpersonal (People Smart): Write a short skit with a partner that shows a conflict and how it is resolved.  If there is no one to work with you, you may write it on your own but you will need to find someone who will perform it with you.  Make sure to use the information that you have learned to create the skit, following the steps that you found. You may want to include an example of the conflict cycle as well. Finally perform your skit to the class.

Intrapersonal (Self Smart): Think of a time that you were really stressed out or were involved in a conflict that needed to be resolved.  What kinds of strategies worked for you to relieve stress and resolve conflicts?  Are they positive ways of resolving conflict?  Create a brochure, handout or fact sheet about the strategies that can be used in a positive manner to resolve conflict. Make sure that your strategies follow what the research and text say about resolving conflicts and managing stress.

Bodily Kinesthetic (Body Smart): If you watch movies or TV where there is fighting, there is always choreography (planned movements). Choreograph a dance that shows the class the how to resolve conflicts and manage their anger and stress.  Your dance should show us the conflict cycle as well as how conflict can be resolved positively.  Be sure to use the information that you have read or heard about conflict resolution to ensure that your information is accurate.
