Essential Question: What are common or well known mental health issues and how are they treated?

Choose one project. Make sure that you complete all of the paperwork that is required such as the contract, the planning paperwork and any other notes or drafts of your project.

Mathematical/ Logical (Number Smart): What are the statistics related to mental health in NH? What about the Northeast? How do these statistics compare to the North West? What mental health issues are most prevalent in the US? Are these issues the same that are most prevalent in NH? Now choose one of the prevalent mental health issues in the United States and find the statistics on how many people that disorder affects.  How is this disorder treated?  How much would this treatment cost a person who does not have medical insurance? What resources are available to people who think they may Present all of this information in either a poster or a power point format.  You will also need to present this to the class in a 5 minute presentation.

Linguistic (Word Smart): Write a 3-5 page paper. Within your paper define what you believe mental health is from the information you have found in your sources.  Choose a specific disorder and give the symptoms of this disorder. Discuss how it is treated.  Finally discuss what others could do to if they found that they might have this disorder.

Spatial (Art Smart): Choose two well known mental health disorders. Research the signs and symptoms, as well as how these disorders are treated.  Finally create a brochure for each of the disorders for those who think they or someone they know may have some of these symptoms.  Make sure to include other resources for those who might read these brochures to check into if they need to.  Present your brochures to the class to show off a little about what you have learned.

Intrapersonal (Self smart): Research your learning disability.  Create a Fact Sheet for people who are diagnosed with this disability and their families.

Your Fact sheet should at a minimum include answers to the following questions:

1.      What is the disability?

2.    What are the symptoms?

3.    How is it diagnosed?

4.    What areas of life does the disability effect?

5.    How is it treated?

6.    Strategies for handling this disability in every day life.

Complete a paragraph that summarizes what you learned about the disability.  The paragraph should include something that is valuable to your everyday dealing with this disability.  You must first complete a paragraph template before writing the paragraph and have me check it before you write. Finally, you will need to turn in a list of the sources that you used to create your fact sheet.  You need to use at least 3 sources.  Don’t worry too much about formatting we can work on that part together.

Interpersonal (People Smart): Interview a mental health professional about their experience with a specific disorder.  Before completing this interview ensure that you know a little bit about the disorder yourself in order to prepare appropriate questions.  After your interview create a presentation in either power point or a poster format to present to the class to display what you have learned.
