Essential Question: Diseases, what can you live with, what can’t you live with and how can you avoid them?

Make sure that you complete all of the paperwork that is required such as the contract, the planning paperwork and any other notes or drafts of your project.

Mathematical/Logical (Number Smart): Choose a disease to learn about.  Find the statistics of that disease.  How many people are afflicted with it?  Where in the world is it a problem?  What pathogen causes the disease? How can you protect your self from it?  Can it be cured or can you live with it? How would it be treated? Present your findings in a chart (either on a poster or through a power point presentation) to the class in a 3-5 minute discussion of your disease.

Linguistic (Word Smart): Read a book about a disease.  You may read either a novel or a non-fiction book however the book needs to be cleared by me.  When you are done reading present what you learned either by writing a report or creating poetry or a fiction story of your own that reflects the information that was in your book. If you would like to write using a different genre, see me and we can discuss it.

Interpersonal (People Smart): Interview a health professional about a disease that is prevalent in the USA.  Find out how it is transmitted, what pathogen causes it?  Find out what the likeliness of you getting it is?  How could you protect yourself from this disease? How often have they seen this disease in their work?  Have they seen a cure or do they think that a cure will come?  How is the disease treated? Can you live with this disease or will it be a terminal disease?

Intrapersonal (Self Smart): Find either a book, novel or poetry about diseases. You could also read several children’s books and reflect on each book.  Read through and reflect on each piece that you read.  If you read a book or novel please reflect after every chapter or section.  If you read a book of poems reflect after each poem.  These reflections are a way of showing me what you have learned as well as how you might feel if you had this disease.  Take the time to really think about what you are going to say before you do your writing.  Pick 3-5 of your favorite reflections to share with the classs.

Music: Is there research about the healing power of music?  What does it say?  What kinds of music are supposed to be healing types of music?  Where can you get these types of music?  What kinds of diseases could music therapy be used on? Is music therapy a cure for diseases? Create a poster or power point explaining this information, make sure to include examples of healing music in your presentation.

Naturalistic (Nature Smart): What is holistic medicine? How effective are holistic methods of treatment for diseases?  Choose a common disease that has holistic methods for treatment.  Find someone who is well versed in holistic medicine and interview them about how effective these methods are.  What are these methods?  What types of diseases are likely to be treated with holistic medicine?  Is there any research on how effective these methods of treatment are?  How were they tested? Create some sort of presentation to present to the class in a 5 minute presentation.  Make sure to have some sort of visual aide for the class to look at while you discuss holistic medicine.

Spatial (Art Smart): Create a 30 public service announcement for a disease (either radio or video).  Tell people how it is caught, how it is treated and what they can do to avoid it. Make sure they know what they should do if they believe that they have this disease. I am looking for clear information about your disease not for a perfect video or radio announcement.  Make sure that you have accurate facts to give to the public. Present this class with your PSA and explain why you chose to present this in this way.

Bodily Kinesthetic (Body Smart): Choose a disease and build a model of it.  Show us where it affects the body and how. Explain your model to the class in a 5 minute presentation.
