Welcome to The RSEC Academy! The RSEC Academy opened in 1996 to provide a southern New Hampshire option for students with significant learning disabilities. The RSEC Academy is a state approved, diploma granting, special education school providing educational opportunities for junior high and high school students.

Mission It is the mission of The RSEC Academy to provide a safe environment to learn skills and strategies that will enable students to successfully transition back to their sending school district, on to further education, or into the community.

Eligibility Students of average or above average intellectual ability, ages 11 – 21, who have been identified with a primary specific learning disability are eligible to attend The RSEC Academy.  Students should not have behavioral, social, or emotional difficulties that would significantly affect their educational program.

Academics The RSEC Academy recognizes that students have a variety of learning styles, patterns of strengths and weaknesses, and vary in their levels of multiple intelligences. The RSEC Academy staff provides class work that challenges students to work on their weaknesses while stretching them to learn new information. The RSEC Academy directly and systematically teaches reading, writing, study skills, and social skills. Multiple opportunities to practice are offered during content area classes. Engaging experiential activities allow students to observe and discover learning while gaining knowledge in natural settings and across the curriculum. Student achievement is assessed using a variety of tools that provide each student with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge in a manner that matches their learning style. Students develop a portfolio that chronicles their achievement throughout the year.

Social Skills The RSEC Academy uses hands-on and real experiences to teach social skills. Students are challenged to work cooperatively, communicate effectively, and solve problems creatively while building their self-awareness about social skills. By using fun and engaging experiential activities, students are able to observe models, practice new skills, and receive feedback in natural settings and across the curriculum.

Community
Building
The RSEC Academy’s community building activities create a foundation on which there are opportunities for students to take risks and attain goals, academically, socially, and personally. Students at The RSEC Academy come from a variety of different personal and educational experiences and are required to learn to work together in order to achieve common goals. Students develop knowledge of their personal strengths and challenges while learning to help others and be part of a team. The RSEC Academy’s activities foster a feeling of community while individuals reach goals they could not achieve on their own.

Transition The RSEC Academy students are able to access many educational opportunities. Students have successfully participated in area vocational programs as well as, during their senior year, classes at the NH Technical College. If distance allows, students may also able to take part-day classes at their public school. Internships have also been an option for students wishing to explore vocational opportunities. Students, families, school districts, and the RSEC Academy work closely to develop transition plans that help the students prepare for their long term goals.

Class size The RSEC Academy provides small group instruction during 45-minute classes. Content area classes such as Math, Social Studies, or Science do not exceed an 8:1 student/teacher ratio. Language classes, providing direct instruction in higher order cognitive skills, do not exceed a 6:1 student/teacher ratio. The Reading Center that provides direct systematic reading instruction does not exceed a 3:1 student/teacher ratio.

Diploma Students at the high school level earn credits toward their high school diploma. The RSEC Academy works closely with the parents or guardians and students to plan for a variety post secondary options.

Calendar RSEC Academy follows a traditional 180 day school calendar.

Extended
