Our Mission

Philosophy Statement

The philosophy of The RSEC Academy is based on the belief that students can learn how to read and write. It is never too late to begin or continue systematic instruction in basic learning skills, and this instruction must occur in multiple environments. Every environment is an opportunity to learn to read and write. Reading and writing can, and should, be taught in conjunction with the instruction in content areas. Students have a variety of learning styles or patterns of strengths and weaknesses. Students also vary in their levels of multiple intelligences. With this in mind, The RSEC Academy will take every opportunity to capitalize on student strengths. Instruction, as well as evaluations, of learning will utilize nonverbal intelligence, which is a valid and valuable learning tool. At The RSEC Academy, a student's self esteem is based on authentic success. The student must be an integral part of planning and assessment. The first step in gaining the cooperation of a student is to demonstrate objective proof of genuine progress toward shared learning objectives. This demonstration of proficiency will build a student's confidence and skills to provide a successful re-entry into the public school.

Message from the Director

The RSEC Academy is a private special education school that opened in the Fall of 1996.

It is approved as a special education and a non-public school program by the NH Department of Education. The RSEC Academy offers two programs: a multi-grade, integrated middle school program for grades 6-8, and a diploma granting high school for grades 9-12.

Adolescents of average intellectual ability, ages eleven to twenty-one, who have been identified with an educational disability in the areas of Asperger’s Syndrome, Emotional Disturbance, Other Health Impaired, Specific Learning Disability, and/or Speech or Language Impairment benefit from the multi-sensory and experiential approach to learning.  Although The RSEC Academy uses Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS), students should not have behavioral, social, or emotional difficulties that would significantly affect their educational program. The RSEC Academy also provides small group instruction not to exceed a 8:1 student/teacher ratio.

It is the mission of The RSEC Academy to provide students with learning challenges, the opportunity, and environment to develop the skills and strategies needed to be independent and successful learners.

The RSEC Academy does have an open admissions policy, but requires a forty-five (45) day diagnostic period so the staff can evaluate the student’s academic needs to determine if The RSEC Academy is the most appropriate placement.  During that time, The RSEC Academy reserves the right to reconsider all enrollments.

We appreciate your support and welcome your comments.

Message from the Assistant Director:

Education is a dynamic venture, both an art and a science. Educational leaders must be prepared to continually adapt to the needs of the ever-changing populations of children flowing through our schools, so those children can in turn actualize their full potential as adult citizens in a productive global community.  The best approach to education in the twenty-first century is a humble, involved, spirited, and collaborative one that involves continually assessing and addressing the needs of the children, their families, the school and the community. This process cannot work unless it includes diverse members from all groups.  Educational leaders must have the vision to empower all of those involved to remain committed to the organization. The ultimate return is achieving the vision: challenging all learners to reach their individual potential and preparing them to realize their role in a community.

I am excited to be here at the RSEC Academy.  The students and staff empower one another each day in both subtle and visible ways; whether through small acts of kindness, encouraging classroom dialogue, or school-wide community building opportunities, the RSEC community strives to realize the potential in each of us. I am humbled to be a part of this community and I look forward to helping all students succeed.

Thank You,

Richard Boardman
